How to get a CA (CHP) # Number
The motor carrier profile CHP 362 application can be found in the CHP website under the commercial vehicle forms section.
You must have a Valid driver’s license, & SSN or EIN on hand to get started. The information provided on the form must always match your legal documentation.
If the information you provide does not match your legal paperwork, the commercial office maybe shred your application & you will need to restart the process.
You will also need to provide the principal place of business. Your business address cannot be a P.O. Box, but it can, and often will be, your residential address.
Providing a contact phone number, (is required) and an email address may expedite your process.
Next you must provide emergency contacts for your business.
Provide details regarding your type of operation, vehicle type specifications are included in the instructions. You must select at least one Type or Operation. Your application will not be processed if you do not make a selection.
If your business operates under a name other than its legal name, you can provide your DBA name. This DBA must be filed with the Secretary of State in order to be added to your motor carrier profile. Providing supporting documentation at time of application may expedite your process.
The USDOT number is also required on your CA # application. If you go not provide an active USDOT or the legal info does not match the information provided in the CHP362 you may need to start the application process all over again. Make sure all legal documentation matches before completing your CA application.
Lastly you must provide a Terminal address. This can be the same as your Principal Place of Business. You must maintain vehicle maintenance & drivers records at your listed terminal address.
On the bottom the page you will also be asked to provide a contact name and phone number, do not list an agents phone number, or your application may be shredded. The person listed must be able to answer questions regarding the business for the purpose of verifying the application before it will be processed.
